The President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), Daniel Igali, has said he is optimistic that wrestlers who will represent the country at the forthcoming Pre-Olympic World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia would qualify to represent Nigeria at the 2024 Olympic in Paris.

Speaking at the end of the second Governor Douye Diri National Wrestling Classics in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state, Igali explained that the 2023 World Wrestling Championships will be held from September 16 to 24, 2023 in Belgrade, Serbia.

He said wrestlers will get a chance to win 90 quotas for the 2024 Summer Olympics from the qualifiers and hopefully Nigerian wrestlers will be equal to the task.

Igali who is the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development in Bayelsa State, said the Wrestling Federation was impressed with the quality of performance of athletes at the just ended National Wrestling Classics.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medalist and 13 time African Champion Blessing Oborududu, World Silver medalist and Commonwealth and 7 time African champion, Odunayo Adekuroye and her sister, Mercy, African champion, Mercy Genesis were among the rated wrestlers who retained their titles at the Governor Diri Classics in the weeklong competition which also witnessed some upsets.

Meanwhile, the Acting Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, who is also a member of the NWF board has called for more investments in sports to give youths opportunities to excel in their chosen career.
