Nigerians have blamed the surge in kidnapping in recent times on failure of the government to provide people with credible means of livelihood.

In an interview conducted by our reporters with a wide range of Nigerians in Lagos, some respondents argued that kidnapping will reduce if government provides job opportunities for its citizenry.

“I think the reason behind kidnapping is unemployment which is alarmingly high in the country today. As we all know, kidnapping is alien to Nigerians and it must be uprooted. I will urge the government to provide job opportunities and also embark on public enlightenment,” Isaac Adebayo said.

He also added that “as individuals, we need to check ourselves so as to ensure that self-security is guaranteed. Parents should give their children proper upbringing and make them religious by taking them to church or mosque regularly,” Adebayo noted.

For Isaiah Ojibike, a university student, “Love of money is the reason behind kidnapping. Many youths are so desperate to get rich quick,” he said.

He said government must take necessary measures like providing job opportunities, increase security, essential amenities, adding that “every individual must create awareness and blow the whistle when they notice any unusual movement in their neighbourhood.”

Similarly, a car dealer by name Francis said ,“I think the cause of kidnapping is idleness because joblessness leads to idleness. The government must provide job opportunities; and as individuals, we must work hard for ourselves to survive.”
