At least one or two Nigerian accomplices are usually named in violent crimes especially internet fraud and armed robbery, according to statistics from the Accra Regional Police Command.
Recent figures from the Ghana Prisons also indicate that over 300 Nigerians are serving various prison terms in the country.
Accra Regional Police Command Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Freeman Tetteh, who disclosed this at a recent interactive programme involving Ghanaian and Nigerian youths in Accra regretted that the trend had marred the image of Nigerians in the country.
“The impression people have here is that every Nigerian is a criminal because of a few of your people that are involved in crime. It is not all Nigerians that are criminals,” he said.
He said there are hard-working and highly educated Nigerians in Ghana.
“But there are a few of your people that are involved in crime. And sadly, all Nigerians are now being labelled as criminals,” Tetteh said.
“I am not saying that Ghanaians are not criminals. In fact some of them have teamed up with your nationals to perpetrate these heinous acts. Whenever we record cases of armed robbery and fraud, a Nigerian is always involved. If they are five persons incriminated three are likely to be Ghanaians the remaining two Nigerians and vice versa,” he said.
