Nigeria’s former Chief of Defence Staff, General Martin Luther Agwai (Rtd), has been conferred with Sierra Leone’s highest national honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of Rokel (GCOR), by President Julius Maada Bio.

The recognition, according to Nick Dazang, Trustee of the Bise Dazang Foundation, is a celebration of Agwai’s “exemplary and luminous contributions in engendering and consolidating peace in Sierra Leone and the West African sub-region when you served as Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL).”

Dazang, in a congratulatory message, said the award was not only a personal achievement but also a reminder of Nigeria’s past leadership role in global peacekeeping.

“The conferment of this award celebrates you, and by extension, our beloved country. It recalls for us, with nostalgia, Nigeria’s once shimmering successes and elevated standing in the comity of nations,” he wrote.

He added that the honour should inspire renewed commitment to peace at a time when Nigeria is grappling with insecurity and terrorism.

“This conferment should spur you and all apostles of peace to do even more, especially as it coincides with a time when the country is confronted with heightened insecurity and terrorism,” Dazang noted.

The GCOR is Sierra Leone’s highest national honour, reserved for individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the nation.
