Nigeria’s senior men’s handball team, the Golden Arrows, kicked off their campaign at the 27th Africa Men’s Handball Nations Cup with a gritty 25–23 victory over Algeria in their opening Group A match on Wednesday in Kigali, Rwanda.

Playing at the Petit Stade, Nigeria asserted themselves early, combining a disciplined defensive structure with sharp attacking execution to take control of the contest.

Their dominance in the first half saw the Golden Arrows go into the break with a 16–13 advantage, putting Algeria under sustained pressure.

The North Africans, however, returned from halftime with renewed intensity, mounting a spirited comeback that narrowed the deficit and threatened to swing the game in their favour.

The Arrows were forced to dig deep as Algeria tested their composure in the latter stages of the match.

Faruk Yusuf was a standout performer, offering leadership from the backcourt while contributing crucial goals at key moments.

John Shagari also impressed on the left wing with his pace and accuracy, providing Nigeria with attacking width. Between the posts, Okwor Obinna delivered a series of vital saves, denying Algeria clear scoring opportunities and preserving Nigeria’s slender lead when it mattered most.

The victory places Nigeria in a favourable position in Group A, which also includes hosts Rwanda and Zambia.

Nigeria will be back on the court today to face Zambia in their second group match
