Nigerian writer, Oyinkan Braithwaite, has won the Anthony Awards 2019 in the Best First Novel category for her debut novel, ‘My Sister, The Serial Killer’. The book was shortlisted for the award on May 15, 2019.
‘My Sister, The Serial Killer’ was published in 2018 and has since won the LA Times Prize. It was also longlisted for the Booker Prize and shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction. It tells the story of a Nigerian woman whose sister is fond of killing her boyfriends.
The categories available in the Anthony Awards are Best Novel, Best First Novel, Best Paperback Original, Best Short Story, Best Critical/Non-fiction Work, and Special Service Award.
Famous writers such as Agatha Christie, J.K Rowling, and Stieg Larsson have previously won in some categories. The Anthony Award is named after the late California writer, Anthony Boucher who wrote for prestigious newspaper firms such as the San Francisco Chronicle and the New York Times Book Review.
