The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University, Dutse (FUD) branch, has raised the alarm over the deteriorating state of public universities in Nigeria, warning that the sector is on the brink of collapse.

Speaking at a press conference in Dutse, the chairperson of ASUU-FUD, Comrade Saleem Ahmad, lamented federal government’s refusal to address the lingering issues plaguing the sector.

Ahmad listed a dozen of outstanding issues, including inadequate funding for university revitalisation, lack of respect for university autonomy and unpaid earned academic allowances.

“The federal government has consistently ignored our leadership and failed to honour agreements reached in the past,” Ahmad stated.

He emphasised that the union’s demands were essential for maintaining the quality and integrity of higher education in Nigeria.

ASUU warned that the continued neglect of public universities would have far-reaching consequences for the country’s education system and its future.

“The decline in the quality of education will adversely affect the country’s development and competitiveness on a global scale,” Ahmad added.

The union vowed to sensitise the public on these issues and mobilise support for its demands, saying, “We will not relent in our efforts to draw attention to the crisis in our universities and push for the necessary changes.”
