A Professor of Geography with specialisation in Population and Development, Rhoda Mundi, has said Nigeria’s response to her high population growth through the formulation of a National Policy on Population for Sustainable Development (NPPSD), has not been very effective largely due to poor funding of the programmes, poor awareness of the policy and socio-cultural factors.

Mundi, who stated this at the 41st Inaugural Lecture at the University of Abuja, with the theme, “The Paradox of Population Growth in National Development,” said considering that the policy is complex and involves multi-sectoral activities, all hands must be on deck to ensure a successful implementation of the 2021 NPPSD.

The don also asked the federal government to provide the necessary funds and seek assistance from relevant development partners to conduct a national population and housing census and strengthen other sources of demographic data collection for evidence based planning.

She also called on the government to strengthen policies that will discourage brain drain and encourage brain gain so that the country can benefit from her vast human resources.
