The Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Architect Sonny S. T. Echono, says Nile University is one of the most sought-after institutions in Nigeria.

Echono stated this while delivering the institution’s 13th convocation lecture on Tuesday.

The topic of this convocation lecture was “Redefining the Nigerian Education System for the 21st Century Workforce”.

According to him, Nile University of Nigeria, which was established in 2009, is one of the fastest growing universities in Nigeria.

Echono stated that the university, having grown to become the flagship of private institutions in the country with academic programs in various fields, including medicine, engineering, law, the sciences, and also the humanities, stands out among its peers.

Echono added that he often receives enquiries about Nile University from prominent Nigerians.

“So, you are one of, perhaps, the most sought-after universities in Nigeria; and I want to congratulate you” he said.

“Your institution fascinates with breadth and depth of knowledge and opportunities that you require for lifelong intellectual and moral growth, as well as awareness of global career choices in emerging professions.

“It is therefore not unexpected that virtually all the university’s academic programs are fully accredited by the regulatory bodies.

“This is a clear demonstration of the university’s commitment to offering a combination of academic rigor, experiential learning, networking, entrepreneurship, and career support services in preparing the students for the global market.”

Echono, however, said the Nigerian curriculum needs to be reformed to allow for the incorporation of new cutting-edge programmes in accordance with global best practices.

“We are also working with telecommunications providers to expand broadband access. Nigeria can enhance the accessibility of digital learning platforms, which have revealed substantial promise and in improving learning outcomes in STEM subject areas, as we navigate into the future.

“The integration of technology into Nigeria’s education system, driven by both public and private sector investments will likely continue to expand.

“The Digital Nigeria project launched by the Nigerian government is targeted at improving the country’s ICT infrastructure. To promote digital literacy across all levels of education.

“The initiative which is reinforced by the growing influence of ex-tech startups is expected to transform Nigeria’s educational landscape. Then of course we need to enhance teacher training and professional development.

“We can no longer have our public spaces; even the private sector in Nigeria is not growing fast enough to absorb the number of youths who seek employment.

“So, we need to produce job creators. We need people who will be able to look at the environment and explore the opportunities that are there.”

In his welcome remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Nile University of Nigeria, Prof. Dilli Dogo FNAMed, said the convocation lecture would address critical questions of national development and guide the graduating students as they prepare for future challenges.

Dogo attributed the university’s steady growth to the institution’s focus on quality education, innovation and strategic investments in infrastructure and staff development.

He said the university is committed to producing quality graduates, equipped with practical skills, entrepreneurial capabilities and a strong sense of purpose.

He added that the university’s medical programme had attracted global recognition including General Medical Council (GMC), UK, amongst others.

On Monday the university launched its recently established Business School, designed to provide world-class professional and executive training.
