NiMet refutes reports on 2013 flooding

“There was nowhere we made such statements” NiMet DG/CEO Dr. Anthony C. Anuforom told journalists in Abuja recently at a briefing on the performance of the 2013 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction and highlights for 2014 predictions.
“Some said there would be more rainfall in 2013 and 2013 has come and gone we did not see any rainfall. In fact, some reports went as far as telling farmers not to listen to NiMet, if they listen to NiMet they do so at their own risks. I want to appeal, that is a very dangerous way to go, not to NiMet but damaging to Nigeria and to Nigerians.”
The 2013 rainfall prediction document read in part: “In 2013 the length of the rainy season is predicted to be normal over most parts of the North and South. However, longer than normal length of the season is likely for most central parts of the country…
“…the predicted rainfall amount for the northwest areas of Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara and environs is likely to be above normal in comparison to 2012.”
Anuforom noted that there was nowhere in the world where people are asked not to listen to weather service providers.
