The federal government has said that new security protocols have been put in place to vet all National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) agents and partners in order to forestall breaches to the country’s identity database.
NIMC, in a statement over the weekend, said all its Licensed Verification Agents, Front End Partners (FEPs) and Diaspora FEPs would now undergo rigorous security vetting to ensure adherence to global best practices in identity management.
The statement, signed by NIMC’s Head of Media, Kayode Adegoke, reads in part: “Furthermore, NIMC affirms that law enforcement authorities have been authorised to crack down on and apprehend individuals involved in online phishing schemes targeting citizens’ data from other sources.
“The commission has received numerous reports regarding fraudulent online platforms compelling Nigerians to submit their personal information for National Identification Number (NIN) modification or enrollment services. Perpetrators of these illegal activities will be apprehended and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

He added that the commission had temporarily suspended the bypass enrollment process to prevent abuse and to rectify irregularities.
