The National Identification Number [NIN] will be needed as a requirement for international passport, bank transaction and driver’s license very soon, the National Identity Management Commission [NIMC] has said.
NIMC’s Director General, Engr. Aliyu Aziz, disclosed this Monday in Abuja at a press conference to announce the commencement of ID4Africa Conference which will be hosted by Nigeria between April 24 and 26.
“It is in the law that NIN should be the major requirement you will need for getting international passport, in bank transaction, voting at elections and in getting driver’s license etc.
“This will be implemented soon; that is after we might have started the ‘One Registration Centre For Every 50,000 people’ scheme being supported by the World Bank. This will start in July and it is expected to rapidly increase the numbers of enrollees in the country’’, he said.
He said so far 30 million Nigerians have been registered and properly captured in the unique database.
The 30m in the database had been harmonised with data collected by agencies like NCC, FRSC, Immigration and others.
Very soon it will be illegal for any agency to ask anyone with NIN to supply his or her data as all it needs to ask for is NIN’’, Hajia Hadiza Dagabana, who is NIMC’s General Manager, Legal Service, said.
“You have the right not to supply your data if you have your NIN. And they must take NIN and all it will take them is just a click and they would get what they need from you. If they reject NIN and you can report them to us and the penalty is N1million against them’’, she said.
Earlier, the chairman of NIMC board, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola has said there wouldn’t have been a need for national census again if the national identification registration had been properly done in the past.
Prince Oyinlola vowed that the present board and management of NIMC would see to the successful implementation of Nigeria’s identity scheme.
He called on all Nigerians and legal residents who are yet to register for NIN to do so as that is part of their civic duty.
The Executive Chairman of ID4Africa, Dr Joseph Atick, said about 1,600 delegates from 90 countries across the world are expected to participate in the conference.
