Due to inadequate skilled artisans in the Nigerian construction industry, the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) organized a workshop for builders across the nation.
The workshop, which was titled ‘Agenda for Skills Development in the Nigerian Building Industry’, was aimed at upgrading the skills of builders towards theoretical and practical training of building artisans.
The two-day workshop was held in four centres: Abuja, Lagos, Enugu and Kano.  Flagging- off the workshop in Lagos, the National President of NIOB, Tijjani Shuaib emphasized the need for training and re-training of artisans and craftsmen in the construction industry as a response to the Federal Government’s desire on job creation and youth empowerment.
The workshop will advance the drive for the assessment and certification of artisans and craftsmen by the institute as a certificate awarding body, encourage members to open up training centres, and ensure that Nigerian youths are gainfully engaged and it is also a way of checking capital flight as foreigners do take up jobs Nigerians should do.
The workshop harped on need to train and re-train workforce in the construction industry to ensure the availability of competent workforce in masonry, carpentry, cabinet maker, furniture and wood work, spray painting, welding, arch welding, iron bending, fabrication and felting.
