The Nigeria Institute of Building (NIOB) said it will soon commence skill training for 100,000 artisans and craftsmen across the country.
NIOB President Tijjani B. Shu’aib who disclosed this in an interview with our reporter said the training is in partnership with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
According to him, the skill training became necessary to shore standards in the building industry, to sanitize the built environment as well as guard against building collapse.
“The programme will commenced from January. We intend to train a minimum of 100,000 artisans and craftsmen in the country.  
“We have already had an agreement with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and certified by the Federal Executive Council to train and certify artisans in the built environment across the country. Currently, we are undergoing the accessing training in Kaduna,” he said.
He said over 3,000 artisans and craftsmen will be trained in each state of the country, adding that after the training NIOB will certify them and give them certificate to practice.
“It would be like the period when we have Trade Test for artisans and craftsmen. Then, it was Trade Test One and Two but now we have six level of qualifications.
“We have seven trades the group will be given skill training namely: carpentry, bricklaying, tilling, painting among others,” he said.
According to him, the target is to train 200,000 beginning with 100,000 now spread across six skill training centres in the six geo-political zones of the country.
