The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) has been urged to intensify efforts toward promoting professionalism and addressing the recurring incidents of building collapse across the country.

The call was made by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Gida Mustapha, in Abuja on Tuesday during the investiture ceremony of the 23rd President of the NIOB, Builder Daniel Abimbola Kolade.

Mustapha emphasized the need for policies that recognize, regulate, and reward professional competence and ethical standards within the building industry. He also advocated stronger collaboration among builders, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure quality and safety in construction.

He noted that the building and construction sector remains a vital driver of national development through employment creation, housing delivery, and infrastructure expansion. However, he said, maintaining high standards and continuous capacity development is crucial to ensuring safety and sustainability in the built environment.

As part of efforts to address these challenges, the NIOB has renewed its focus on professional training, research, and ethical compliance. The institute has also prioritized mentoring young professionals and students to bridge competence gaps and align with national skill development goals.

In his acceptance speech, the 23rd President of the NIOB, Builder Daniel Abimbola Kolade, announced plans for an intensive programme aimed at enhancing capacity development and mentorship for students, probationers, and early-career professionals in the building sector.

Kolade stressed that the initiative is anchored on the recognition that the future of the profession depends on empowering young builders.

“The future of our profession lies in the hands of our young builders. This administration will intensify capacity development and mentorship programmes targeted at students, probationers, and early-career professionals,” he said.

He added that his administration would focus on innovation, research, entrepreneurial development, and updating professional regulations and ethics. The NIOB, he noted, will also strengthen advocacy and policy engagement to further advance the building profession in Nigeria.

Kolade further pledged to deepen collaboration with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and other training institutions to enhance the Recognition of Prior Learning, skills acquisition, and competency certification.

“Our ongoing partnership with agencies such as the Nigerian Correctional Service on skills development will also be expanded, creating real pathways for empowerment and national reintegration,” he added.
