The world today,June 5, again,celebrates the World Environment Day, a day set aside by the United Nations annually for encouraging worldwide awareness, to invite political attention and engender actions to protect our environment.

The UN had in fact declared 2011-2020 as a decade of Biodiversity, to underscore its importance as life support, the very live wire that connects the survival of the variety of different forms of life on earth.

This year’s celebration, the last in the decade, calls for improvement on efforts to make the planet earth more convenient to live in by engaging in practices like planting of trees, limiting the amount of surfaces exposed to concrete cover, and promoting soft landscapes in order to mitigate the effects of climate change.

The Nigerian Institute of Town Planers (NITP), a professional body whose main purpose is the promotion of livable human settlements, joins the rest of the world in celebrating this important day.

The Institute will continue to pursue best practices in the preservation of the environment for generations yet unborn, and encourage governments at various levels, private sector, and citizens in general to embrace living habits that would enhance sustainable living. In this regard, NITP calls on governments to effectively engage the services of its members to offer professional services such as preparation of regional plans, master plans etc. that would make our settlements a better place to live, in line with the global drive of the New Urban Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals SDGs.
