President of the NLC Comrade Abdulwahed Omar in a chat with reporters after yesterday’s inaugural session said the energy, resources and manpower utilised must be justified.
“This conference must be different from others in terms of implementation of the resolutions. If resolutions or positions are reached, they are adopted and then it will be a fair reflection of what Nigerians want or expect and we will now focus on the issue of implementation also which the government must be up and doing,” Omar said.
Speaking on what organised labour is bringing to the table, he said his constituency is “coming as usual with very pan Nigerian position. We believe in the unity and indivisibility of Nigeria as a nation and when we do that as a foundation, then we go along to discuss fundamental issues that are worrying or affecting the progress of Nigeria.
“My expectation is that something good will come out of the conference. What is even very significant is the fact that we must make sure that the conference is carried out openly and transparently allowing people to talk and express their views and then it would be subjected to debate.”
While stating that NLC will specifically look at issues of governance, he explained that congress will “have to look at the structure and the cost of governance, then transparency, issues of corruption, unemployment and security. These are very major areas that we want to have open and free discussion.”
