NLRC sets up experts’ group to review laws

The Nigerian Law Reform Commission (NLRC) has set up an expert group to review the drafting, proof-reading and printing of the country’s laws.

A statement by the commission revealed that before the setting up of the group, some staff of the Commission and that of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture were sent to the Federal Printing Press, Lagos to obtain gazetted copies of the Principal Acts and Subsidiary Instruments made under them.

“After the gathering of materials, the Commission commissioned group of experts selected from the academia, legal practitioners, law researchers etc. to go through the laws carefully by pointing out errors, omissions, unnecessary words, wrong references; voided sections of the law, amendments, repealed, spent, obsolete laws and other necessary recommendations for corrections to be effected.

“The experts commenced work in July 2018 and completed the review in September, 2018,” the statement read in part.

To ensure the authenticity and correctness of the work of the expert groups, the Chairman of the Commission, Barrister Kefas Magaji was said to have inaugurated a review group with the members made up of seasoned and experienced law revision experts to review the work of the expert groups and make necessary recommendations to the Commission.

Some of the members of the group include: Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), Prof. Ayo Atsenua, Illokatune Sanusi (SAN), Prof. Jummai Audi and Prof. M. L. Ahmadu.

Others are: Prof. Joy Ezeilo, Prof. Yemi Akinseye-George (SAN), Prof. Oluduro Bayo, Prof. Peter Akper (SAN), and Prof. Ofonze Amucheazi (SAN).
