Nigerian Medical Association has called on President Muhammadu Buhari and leaders of ruling APC to prevail on Osun state governor Ogbeni Aregbesola to pay up six months of arrears owed doctors in the state.
In a statement on Thursday, the association demanded doctors’ “rightful and legitimate claims – full salary for six months, skipping and relativity in accordance with established principles of Universal Applicability.”
It said it had become inundated with reports of deaths and injuries of women and children daily in Osun, which it blamed on “the complete collapse of healthcare in certain sections of Osun State.”
“This is consequential upon the withdrawal of services by Doctors who have not been paid full salaries for six months,” said Dr Adewunmi Alayaki, secretary-general of the association in Abuja.
The association has blamed Osun state government for using health as a campaign platform to garner votes and then failing to keep promises made to Osun residents.
“Health is seen as one of the cardinal points used by political parties to canvass for votes during campaigns hence, it should not be neglected by any government,” said Alayaki.
