Why should they say that since the Nigeria Prisons Service is a single federal organization with the right to keep detainees and convicted felons wherever it wants in Nigeria? According to the governors and the many groups that rushed to assist them in the agitation, Ekwulobia’s is not a maximum security prison, hence there is the danger that the Boko Haram men can escape into the surrounding bushes and cause mayhem in Igboland. Even Onitsha traders waded in, saying since they did not commit the offences for which they are detained in Igboland, they should not be held there. Who said that? You mean if a man steals vehicle spare parts at Epiwek he cannot be held in a prison in Gwoza?
Even MASSOB is up in arms, saying the men must be moved because their stay is causing tension and uncertainty in Igboland. I thought MASSOB is more courageous than that. How can you actualize the Sovereign State of Biafra if you become tense and anxious at the mere presence of a few Boko Haram men in Ekwulobia, for that matter behind prison walls? Nna, remember the Biafran ethic about being your brother’s keeper?
Looking for failed dad Uche
The Lagos State Government is looking for Mr. Benjamin Uche, the father of a new set of twins who absconded from home and left his wife to her own devices. It all started when Mrs. Ruth Uche, who is a teacher in a private school in Agege, gave birth for the third time. The new arrivals turned out to be a set of twins. Her husband, who works at a weaving factory in Agege, was there to witness the twins’ arrival but soon after that he left the hospital and never went back. Mrs. Uche said whenever she called his phone number he will refuse to answer, even though he was apparently okay because he will answer calls from unknown phone numbers.
All evidence suggests that Benjamin Uche ran away from home because he was fed up with his wife’s extra-fertility. The recent arrivals were her third consecutive set of twins. Even though this is Mrs. Uche’s third delivery, the couple already has six children. Their homestead is getting a bit crowded because they live in a one bedroom apartment, hence Mr. Uche’s decision to take off. Now blessings have come to Mrs. Uche from many directions following her husband’s shock disappearance. Many churches, individuals and charity organizations rushed to her aid with foodstuff, clothing and money. Governor of Lagos State Akinwunmi Ambode also waded in, and Mrs. Uche was received in audience by deputy governor Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule, who said Ambode had approved an undisclosed welfare package for her. He also directed several state agencies to assist the hapless mother.
Now the Lagos State Government is looking for Benjamin Uche and has urged him to return home and look after his family. I predict that this failed husband and father will soon resurface. He will do so because the home he abandoned unceremoniously has now transformed beyond his wildest imagination. Food is now available; there is water, there is baby food, there are napkins, there is milk, there is sugar and there is money. Far from the desolate, God-forsaken household that he thought it was when he abandoned it, the Agege home is now a house of milk and honey. If I know Nigerian men very well, Mr. Benjamin Uche will resurface and he will tell his wife a cock and bull story about his supervisor at work sent him on a sudden errand to a faraway place…
