As a member of the prestigious Zamore Lab at UMass Medical School’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) and a former Senior Research Associate at Dicerna Pharmaceuticals, Ukabiala brings over three years of experience in both academia and industry. Leveraging his Master’s in Integrative Neuroscience from Georgetown University, he has contributed to breakthrough research focused on developing solutions for neuroscience-related diseases and unraveling the complexities of the piRNA biogenesis system.

A Dream Sparked by Personal Challenges

Ukabiala’s journey began with a dream—to become a respected scientist and address major health challenges affecting society. Growing up, he aspired to become a medical doctor to tackle the health issues that affected his family. Sixteen years ago, as a high school senior and head boy at Lifeforte High School in Ibadan, Nigeria, he gazed out from the school’s red aluminum rooftop, envisioning a future in medicine. Admired by peers for his meticulous nature, he seemed destined for a clinical career.

However, at 17, his path took a profound turn while studying abroad in Hungary. “That was when I realized I wanted to be a scientist,” he recalls, eyes bright with determination. This realization was driven by personal heartbreak: his aunt’s struggle with epilepsy and his uncle’s battle with schizophrenia left a lasting impact on him. “Watching my aunt suffer from seizures and being accused of possession was a defining moment,” he shares. “I knew then that my calling wasn’t in treating symptoms but in exploring the biochemical roots of these conditions to make a real difference.”

A Trailblazer in Research and Innovation

Ukabiala’s scientific career began to flourish as he took on a key role at Dicerna Pharmaceuticals, where he served as a Senior Research Associate from April 2021 to September 2023. During this time, he initiated and led numerous new gene target studies, consistently delivering high-quality data at weekly meetings. His responsibilities extended to processing data for two primary disease targets, optimizing in vivo sample processing, and developing antibody protocols for both rodent and nonhuman primate tissues. His rigorous training equipped him with expertise in new target screening, RNA/DNA extraction, and antibody optimization, while his work with rodent models honed his skills in vivo dosing procedures.

Joining the Zamore Lab and Advancing piRNA Research

Today, Ukabiala is a PhD candidate in the GSBS program at UMass Medical School, conducting pioneering research in the Zamore Lab within the RNA Therapeutics Institute. His focus on piRNAs—a specialized class of regulatory RNAs that help maintain genomic stability—marks a significant shift in his career, as he now seeks to map the protein interactions involved in piRNA biogenesis. This ambitious research involves next-generation sequencing and advanced bioinformatics, techniques that enable him to analyze piRNA gene clusters at a granular level.

Reflecting on his scientific journey, Ukabiala explains, “I’ve learned to perform a range of intricate techniques, from intracardiac tracer injections to brain dissection and immunohistochemistry. My passion for neuroscience has kept me going, even when the work was demanding.” He recalls early challenges with surgical techniques, saying, “I was initially terrified, but with each experiment, my confidence grew. Now, I’ve sacrificed and processed hundreds of mouse brains, each step bringing me closer to the answers I’m looking for.”

Contributions Beyond the Lab

In addition to his technical expertise, Ukabiala has made significant contributions to his research community. As a Research Assistant and Lab Manager at Baylor University from 2016 to 2019, he trained recruits, maintained lab operations, and developed standard operating procedures for new techniques. He even served as a Biology Learning Assistant, where he supported students through lesson plans and one-on-one guidance.

Ukabiala’s academic foundation includes an M.S. in Integrative Neuroscience from Georgetown University (2019-2020) and a B.S. in Neuroscience from Baylor University (2019). His multidisciplinary background, which integrates biology, psychology, and chemistry, has shaped his approach to problem-solving in the lab.

A Rising Star in Biomedical Science

Throughout his career, Ukabiala has demonstrated exceptional skill in DNA/RNA analysis, molecular biology, and bioinformatics. He also possesses unique organizational and leadership abilities, having managed multiple gene-target projects as a Senior Research Associate. Shortly after completing his Master’s, Novo Nordisk/Dicerna trusted him to lead five major projects, recognizing his potential to drive meaningful research forward.
