Yet, his passion transcends the laboratory—he is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of scientists, particularly in Nigeria, where he spent his formative years.
Through his recently published biochemistry textbook tailored for young teens in Nigeria, Ukabiala seeks to ignite curiosity and empower future innovators. His collaboration with the “Leave No Boy Behind” organization exemplifies his dedication to creating pathways for success among young teens. By volunteering and forging partnerships, he offers what he calls his widow’s mite—a heartfelt contribution to advancing education and opportunities for the boy child.
“It is essential that as the world empowers girls and women, we ensure boys are not left behind,” Ukabiala reflects, drawing on the profound influence of his mother in shaping his path to success. “Thanks to my mom’s extra push, my brothers and I found our footing in life and began charting the right courses for our futures. That same guidance and support should be extended to boys as well.”
Empowering the girl child has become a resounding global movement, championed through initiatives focused on education, healthcare, and gender equality. Influential voices like Joyce Banda, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Melinda Gates have amplified this advocacy, highlighting its transformative impact on society. The call for gender parity has ushered in remarkable progress for women worldwide.
Yet, amidst this growing momentum, Ukabiala is raising a critical concern: the imbalance in empowerment efforts. He believes that while uplifting girls is vital, boys also need support to thrive and grow into responsible men who can contribute meaningfully to society. Through his work with the “No Boy Left Behind” organization, Ukabiala is championing balanced empowerment. “I want to equip boys with the tools to succeed too,” he said passionately. His vision is clear: fostering a sustainable and inclusive future where both boys and girls have equal opportunities to reach their full potential.
To bring his mission to life, the neuroscientist embarked on a series of impactful and creative initiatives. He started volunteering at local churches where he sold essential goods for $50 to support his cause. Ukabiala also leveraged his artistic talents. He painted and sold artworks, raising an impressive 500,000 naira. “Every penny from these sales goes to charity,” he added, underscoring his unwavering commitment to making a difference.
Taking it a step further, Ukabiala’s contributions extend to his mother’s platform, “No Boy Left Behind,” a cause close to his heart. Through this initiative, he champions the empowerment of boys, ensuring they receive the resources and guidance needed to thrive alongside efforts for girls’ inclusion.
Ukabiala is accelerating his mission to inspire and educate the next generation of scientists with the release of his eagerly anticipated biochemistry textbook for young teens in Nigeria. “This project is deeply personal,” he acknowledged, noting it was rooted in his own journey of discovery and the crucial role his mother played in shaping his academic aspirations. “I started to nurse the idea of becoming a scientist very early in my life. My mother would bring advanced textbooks from the U.S. and challenge my brothers and me to master information two grades ahead of our level. “I realized then that exposure was key to success,” Ukabiala chuckled.
After earning his Master’s degree from Georgetown University, Ukabiala decided to channel his passion into writing about biochemistry. “Starting early is the key,” he emphasized. “People often underestimate kids’ intellectual capabilities, but they can achieve remarkable things when exposed to appropriately challenging information at an early age.”
Today, Ukabiala’s biochemistry textbook—a concise 64-page book divided into five engaging chapters—makes the subject accessible, relatable, enjoyable, and digestible for young readers.
The first chapter, titled “Meet the Molecules,” introduces foundational ideas such as atoms and molecules, laying the groundwork for deeper exploration into biochemistry. Other chapters address subtopics like The Cell: Nature’s Tiny Factory; Energy and Metabolism; The Code of Life: DNA and Protein Synthesis; and Regulation and Homeostasis.
Another appealing part of the biochemistry textbook is each chapter opens with an invitation that instantly sparks curiosity and confidence in its young readers: “Hello, future scientists!” These simple yet powerful words set the tone for a journey of discovery, encouraging teens to see themselves as budding scientists. The first chapter paints a vivid picture: “Picture this: you’re in a gigantic toy store, and every toy is made from tiny building blocks. These building blocks are atoms!” By connecting the abstract concept of atoms to the familiar imagery of a toy store—a place every teenager has once encountered or imagined—the book creates an engaging and memorable learning experience. It’s a virtual tour that transforms science into something tangible and exciting when you read it.
Ukabiala continues this approach throughout the book. He addressed his young readers directly as scientists in every chapter. Chapter two begins with a warm greeting: “Hey there, young explorers!” Chapter four invites them into the next adventure with “Hello, future biochemists!” while chapter five concludes with an enthusiastic “Hey there, young biochemists!” This consistent reinforcement of identity as scientists not only builds confidence but also fosters a sense of belonging in the world of science.
Interactive and engaging the mind, the textbook uses simple illustrations like dust, balloons, building blocks, friendship, drops of water, giving and receiving, swimming, cozy blankets, fuel, meat, eggs, doctors, workers at construction sites, superstars, and consuming protein, energy, waking up, breakfast, among others to drive home its message.
As you read on, the book slowly introduces the reader to jargon like cells, DNA, nucleus, ribosomes, lysosomes, apparatus, cell plants, cell membranes, and endoplasmic; then there is a mention of experts in the fields.
The writer wraps up his book with a delicious note, charging the young readers to roll up their sleeves and dive into the world of Biochemistry. “I hope you had fun learning about homeostasis and regulation.
