New Nigerian Newspaper pensioners have appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene over their unpaid pension. 

In a statement signed by their spokesperson, Aliyu Modibbo, the pensioners from North East zone said they were owed pension arrears of over 10 months. Modibbo explained that Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) in October last year promised to pay the pension arears in March this year, but the agency is yet to fulfil its pledge. He accused a director in the Federal Ministry of Finance of blocking their payment.

“Last month, a director in the Federal Ministry of Finance said he would not release funds for the payment of the pension,” he alleged, describing the action of both the director and PTAD as “heartless”.  

According to Modibbo, most of the pensioners could not afford to send their children to schools, feed themselves well and cater for their medical needs.

“Most of us are stranded in our stations of posting where we retired because of lack of money to relocate back to our states of origin,” they lamented.
