The newly sworn-in Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), Prof. Tunji Olaopa, has said that many things would change in the operations of the commission, with zero tolerance for cash and carry culture and business as usual.

He said this on Thursday in Abuja when he formally take over from Dr. Tukur Bello Ingawa and resumed as Chairman of the commission.

Prof. Olaopa said he was committed to the transformation of the commission, warning those staff that has become a stain on the organisation’s reputation through their disreputable acts to desist in their own interest.

“As an advocate of reform, I will be deliberate in our approach in turning things around at the commission,” Olaopa said in a statement by the spokesman of the commission, Mr Taiwo Hassan.

Flanked by Dr. Jonah Madugu, the most senior Commissioner; and Permanent Secretary, Dr. Yakubu Adam Kofarmata, the Chairman said that he was determined to make a few scapegoats to serve as deterrence for those with criminal behavior saying that whosoever is caught will face the consequence as nobody is above the law.

He said that in his first few months he would pursue vigorously the rebranding of the organization to bring integrity to it.

He said, “The second is to look at the basic functions of the commission and assess it impact with a view to see gaps as well as look at the way recruitment, promotion and discipline are conducted and link it to a larger Human Resources based on merit and credibility and not mediocrity.

“We have a zero tolerance for cash and carry culture of some notorious few that has become a stain on the commission’s reputation, thereby casting an unwelcome shadow on the many hardworking and dedicated personnel that diligently conscientiously commit to the mission of the organization.”

While commending his immediate predecessor, Dr. Tukur Bello Ingawa for doing a great job which he called ‘grand innovations and legacies’, Olaopa said that he was in the commission to do “serious business and not to play, serious minded staff will be duly rewarded”.

Daily Trust reports that Olaopa retired as a Permanent Secretary in 2016, after working on several public policy reforms where he was a Director of Programmes, Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR): Special Assistant on Reforms to the Head of Service of Nigeria on Public Service Reforms as well as Director, External Linkages and Reforms Department, Office of Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.
