Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), on Wednesday dismissed claims of a plot to impeach Senate President Godswill Akpabio, describing the reports as false, misleading, and aimed at causing disunity within the upper chamber.
Bamidele’s clarification followed comments by former Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia North), who had on Tuesday told journalists that there were previous, though unsuccessful, moves by some lawmakers to remove Akpabio from office.
Kalu had said the alleged plan was thwarted after senior members intervened to preserve stability, urging senators to focus on legislative work and national development rather than political scheming.
However, reacting during Wednesday’s plenary, Bamidele said there was no truth in Kalu’s claims, stressing that the Senate remains united and focused on its constitutional responsibilities.
“There was no attempt by any of our colleagues, nor any discussion about removing the Senate President,” he said. “We have adopted a zero-tolerance policy for distractions because there are urgent national issues demanding our attention. Reports like that are simply meant to create confusion.”
He added that the Red Chamber is stable and committed to addressing issues that directly impact Nigerians. “The Senate is stable. There is no crisis and no plan to remove anyone,” Bamidele reiterated.
Kalu had earlier told reporters that although there were discussions about Akpabio’s removal, the matter was quickly resolved to protect the integrity of the Senate.
“Though there were attempts, we didn’t allow that to happen. That is why I always say we are one big family, and it is not going to happen,” Kalu said.
