No policies protecting right of children with disabilities

Chairman of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) International Professor Pai Obanyan said this during the review of the “State of the World Children report on, Children with disabilities” produced by United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) recently.
He noted that most children with disabilities are excluded from participating in activities that would have enabled them live fulfilling lives.
According to him, most governments refuse to acknowledge that more investments need to be put into children with disabilities so that they can contribute to the social, cultural and economic vitality of their communities.
He advocated that that like the state of report says, for the benefit and flourishing of persons with disabilities inclusive policies should be implemented.
He said that for the societies to attain its full potentials, inclusive policies most go beyond integration, with policies involving inclusive physical facilities, inclusive psycho- social learner support, inclusive curriculum, inclusive teaching- learning materials, inclusive pedagogy, inclusive learning assessment and inclusive integration into adult productive life functions.
He frowned at the practise whereby charity is given to persons with disabilities saying that such practices should be banned as they undermined the integrity of the person.
He also advised that people who discriminate or stigmatised persons with disabilities should be sanctioned.
