The chairman of Lobi Stars and Permanent Secretary, Benue State Ministry of Youth, Sports and Creativity, Dr. Philip Nongu, has commended Moses Orkuma for consistently sponsoring the Orkuma Unity football tournament in Gboko.
This year’s tournament which was the eighth edition started on May 18 and climaxed on Sunday, June 22 with the sponsor’s team, Orkuma Football Academy emerging as champions after a slim 1-0 victory over St. Michaels FC Ameladu.
Dr. Nongu who performed the ceremonial kickoff at the famous JS Tarka Stadium praised the high standard of the organization and charged the donor of the Cup, a former player of Lobi Stars, to keep up the good work.
He reiterated that Orkuma has demonstrated exemplary and uncommon commitment to grassroots football development.
“I am proud to be part of this historic tournament. Moses Orkuma and his team have done a tremendous job maintaining the quality and standard of this competition since its inception eight years ago.
“What he is doing is no doubt in line with the vision of the present administration in Benue State which is to unearth hidden talents and give them the opportunity to excel in sports.
“This competition is pivotal to football development in the state and I charge other illustrious sons of the state to emulate this selfless gesture by their colleague,” said Nongu.
In recognition of his contributions to football development in Benue State, Dr. Nongu was honoured with an Award of Excellence by the organisers of the tournament.
Dr. Nongu was accompanied to the event by Lobi Stars Board Member Mr. Atoo Andiir, Team Manager Mr. Lawrence Adoga, and Lobi Stars coach, Tony Bolus.
Meanwhile, the winners of the tournament, Orkuma Academy took home a trophy and cash prize of N500,000, St. Michaels received N300,000 as runners-up prize while Fidei Poly FC and Hopeland Vandeikya got N200,000 and N100,000 respectively for finishing in third and fourth positions.
