Kano State-owned Northwest University has conferred honorary doctorate degrees on the late Kano business mogul and philanthropist, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, and former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Three other Nigerians were also recognised for their outstanding contributions to education, entrepreneurship, and national development.
The honorary degrees were awarded during the university’s second combined convocation ceremony of the University on Saturday.
The late elder statesman, Dantata, was posthumously awarded a Doctorate degree in humanities for his relentless philanthropy, promotion of education including Islamic learning as well as his lifelong contributions to commerce and social development.
His eldest son, Alhaji Tajuddeen Aminu Dantata, received the award on behalf of the Dantata family.

Kwankwaso received an Honorary Doctor of Education (Honoris Causa) for his “leadership in founding the university and far-reaching contribution to educational reforms in Kano State”.
His initiatives included the establishment of hundreds of secondary schools, vocational centres, and scholarship programmes that benefited thousands of students locally and abroad.
Mother of Africa’s richest man Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Hajiya Mariya Sunusi Dantata, received an Honourary Doctorate degree in humanities for her advocacy work in girl-child education and humanitarian works.
Alhaji Aliyu Sa’adu Bebeji and Alhaji Adamu Yahya Maikifi were also presented with Doctorate degrees for their outstanding achievements in business and job creation.
Chancellor of the university and Emir of Lafia, Justice Sidi Bage, presented the awards to the awardees with a call on them to continue to keep the tempo.
The visitor to the university, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, praised the awardees for their enduring legacies, restating his unwavering commitment to reviving educational institutions in the state.
“Because of my zeal to make sure the Northwest University came into existence, I used my personal money to build some parts of the university,” the governor remarked.
The ceremony also officially marked the restoration of the university’s name-Northwest university- from Yusuf Maitama Sule to serve as a stark reminder on the power of vision, sacrifice and sustained investment in education to shape the future of incoming generations.
Deputy governor Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, and speaker house of assembly Ismaila Falgore, Emir Muhammad Sanusi were among dignitaries that graced the occasion.
