The 19 northern governors will soon launch a mega operation against the menace of cattle rustling in the region, Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Gnaduje has said.
Ganduje, who stated this at a dinner with pressmen in Kano, said the governors had discussed the matter extensively at the Northern Governors’ Forum meeting, adding that having realized the quantum of the disaster in the region, the governors resolved to join hands together to address it.
“We are very much concerned about cattle rustling in the region, hence the decision to face the problem squarely. Already the governments of Katsina, Zamfara, Bauchi and Kaduna states have sent their delegations to Kano in that respect,” he said.
He stated that traditional leaders would be involved in the crusade against rustling, saying that it was a fight that needed a holistic approach. “All stakeholders are being encouraged to contribute their own roles,” he said.
Ganduje pointed out that in Kano state over 10,000 stolen cows were so far recovered and returned to their rightful owners within just one year, disclosing that the committee set up by his administration to handle matters related to cattle rustling in the state was up and doing in curtailing the problem.
