The Northern People’s Union (NPU) has cautioned Nigerian politicians against exploiting ethnic and religious differences for political gain, warning that such practices threaten national unity and peace.

Speaking during a press conference in Kaduna, the Union’s National President, Abu Muhammad, said the group was founded to confront “tribalism, religious intolerance, and moral decay” that continue to undermine the country’s progress.

“We stand as a beacon of hope for Nigerians, committed to promoting tolerance, strengthening national cohesion, and alleviating the suffering of citizens caused by social vices and systemic challenges,” Muhammad said.

He stressed that Nigeria must never be allowed to fracture along ethnic or religious lines. “Instead, we must embrace our diversity as a strength, respecting one another’s beliefs, traditions and customs,” he urged.

The group, which draws its membership from NGOs across the globe, outlined its focus on youth empowerment, skills development, mentorship and inclusiveness as part of efforts to secure a united and prosperous future.

Muhammad further called on government at all levels to deliberately pursue programs that promote peaceful coexistence. “We urge deliberate efforts toward empowering citizens through skills development in high-demand sectors, agricultural expansion, financial inclusion and other sustainable pathways to prosperity,” he said.

While commending Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for what it described as his “exceptional demonstration of maturity and calmness” in the face of political tension, the NPU insisted that such leadership should guide the nation.

“Governor Fubara chose the higher path, prioritizing peace, setting aside ego and ensuring the preservation of lives and property,” Muhammad noted. “His actions exemplify the kind of leadership our nation desperately needs.”

The Union appealed to Nigerians at home and abroad to rise above personal ambitions and unite for the good of the country. “We have no other home but Nigeria, and this nation is greater than any single individual,” Muhammad said.
