Major polo centers across northern Nigeria are preparing to host grand Sallah polo tournaments, set to celebrate the end of Ramadan in style.
Leading clubs including Kaduna Polo Club, Kano Polo Club, Guards Polo Club in Abuja, Fifth Chukker & Country Polo Club in Kaduna, and Katsina Polo Club are all putting finishing touches on plans for festive competitions.
According to sources at Polo Royals, preparations are in full swing, with Fifth Chukker taking a prominent role in organizing its Eid polo tournament. The events, traditionally open to playing members of each club, also serve as a vital opportunity to ready players ahead of the official polo season, which went on recess in March before Ramadan.
A Kaduna Polo Club official, Kontagora, revealed that the upcoming Sallah holiday will be a special one for the club.
“Yes, we are hoping to organize a special Sallah mini tournament this year for all the good reasons. Kaduna Polo Club has a tradition of hosting Eid tournaments, and the committee is pulling all stops to host another exciting and memorable event this May,” he said.
Similar excitement is brewing across the region, with Guards Polo Club in Abuja, Kano Polo Club, Katsina Polo Club, and Minna Polo Club reportedly planning their own tournaments as part of the Sallah celebrations. Newly established clubs including Maiduguri Polo Club, Jalingo Polo Club, Zaria Polo Club, and Yola Polo Club are also preparing festive polo events or Durbar displays in April, shortly after the Ramadan fast.
In Sokoto, the Seat of the Caliphate, polo enthusiasts can look forward to a mini tournament hosted by Sokoto Polo Club, aimed at marking the end of Ramadan and showcasing the resurgence of polo in the state. The event is generating strong interest both locally and nationally, signaling a festive return of high-quality northern polo competitions.
With top-tier clubs mobilizing their best players and organizing committees pulling out all the stops, this year’s Sallah polo tournaments promise to be a vibrant celebration of sport, culture, and community across northern Nigeria.
