Speaking when he visited Kaduna National Library, he lamented that five decades after Nigeria’s independence, the Northern region has continued to lag behind educationally, noting that the insurgency ravaging the North-east part of the country has further widened the gap.
According to him, Boko Haram insurgency has undermined the educational progress of Northern Nigeria, adding that Nigerian political elites have succeeded in destroying the educational system while they take refuge in sending their wards to schools abroad.
He said: “There is low level of enrolment in primary, secondary and post education levels. There is also general relative lack of interest in education in the North compared to the South. There is low level of investment by northern state governments and previous national government in areas of education in the North,”
“Due to the insurgency bedeviling the North-eastern part of the country, the image of the North and northern people nationally and internationally is an image of people that are opposed or resistant to western education.
“What is needed here is how the northern states can come together to tackle this issue of education emergency. Kaduna State and the North in general cannot make progress without heavy investment in education.”
Sani promised to come to the aid of the library in the area of books, furniture and conferences to promote reading culture among the people.
