The Director- General of NOSDRA, Sir Peter Idabor, in his remark said that NOSCP, which is the blueprint for the management of all oil spills in the Nigerian environment, particularly Tier 3 level incidents, would establish roles of key government ministries, departments and agencies, as well as test national capacity and capability during major oil spill incidents.
He added that the blueprint integrated the three tiers of oil spill response contingency plans, thereby providing the necessary organizational structure, command and control, communication network and information services to ensure that government can be fully informed of any spill, monitor the spill response and intervene when required in order to save the threatened environment.
He recalled that the timely activation of NOSCP in 2011 was of immense importance as the knowledge and expertise gained from the exercise helped in combating the Bonga oil spill incident of the same year.
Idabor stressed that it was pertinent to conduct periodic exercises in order to validate the functionality of the plan, considering that disasters are unpredictable.
While calling on all stakeholders to consider it a national duty to cooperate with NOSDRA in strengthening national capacity for oil spill response, the DG expressed optimism that with such teamwork, the upcoming NOSCP activation exercise would be successful.
In another development, the DG has urged newly inducted staff of the agency to justify their appointments by being committed to their assignments, in line with the Public Service Rules and Regulations.
The DG who stated this during the induction of new staff of the agency, emplored them to carry out their duties diligently.
Some of the new staff who spoke to the press at the occasion expressed their willingness and determination to contribute their quota to institutional development of NOSDRA.
