The Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the November 6 governorship election in Anambra State, Senator Andy Uba, yesterday expressed optimism that the election will hold, saying nothing will stop the poll.
Uba in an interview in Lagos, also expressed confidence that Anambra people will vote for him. He said all indices favour him to win the election.
Though he described the current insurrection in the South-East as a sad symptom, Uba stated that the people prefer democracy to anarchy. He said he is engaging those that matter in the state to ensure the election was held in a peaceful atmosphere.
He said, “As I have said, the militant agitation is a sad symptom of dissatisfaction among a segment of people but not all the people, by any means. There is a majority of people who understand that even an imperfect election is preferable to perfect anarchy.
“Many appreciate that Nigeria is still on a long learning curve and that gradually over time, we will begin to get things right. The only way to change unsuccessful governance is to vote out the unsatisfactory incumbent at the polls and give a new administration an opportunity to do better. That is the democratic and constitutional way. There is no other way for now and I have no doubt that in November, the majority of the people of Anambra State will exercise their franchise and vote for the APC to make her great,” he said.
According to him, the ruling party in the state, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) had lost touch with the people.
“You can see what is happening in Anambra. We are bringing people together, even the governor’s ward chairman left him. The Deputy Governor left him and everybody has joined APC. So the governor’s ward chairman has left him and joined APC and of course he would vote for me,” he added.
On the 2003 episode in Anambra State, where the then governor of the state, Chris Ngige was abducted, he stated that he had no hand in the incident.
“I had absolutely nothing to do with that incident and is another example of an untruth being made to sound true as a result of much repetition. I actually got wind of that news while on a foreign trip with President Obasanjo at the time.
“The matter was thoroughly investigated subsequently and no mention of my complicity is contained in the White Paper, which is public record,” he said.
Uba however said his first priority would be to conduct local government elections.
