The following steps should be taken by transporters of animals:

BEFORE A JOURNEY:

Health checks: animals should be checked by a veterinarian and certified fit for transportation.
Preparation: Animals should be acclimated to the handling facilities and transport conditions to reduce stress.

Paperwork: ensure all necessary documentation is complete, including details of origin, destination and journey duration.
Vehicle inspection: Thoroughly inspect the vehicles for any weak spots, sharp objects or other hazards that could injure the animals.

DURING LOADING AND TRANSPORT:

Gentle handling: Use calm, quiet movement and handlers trained in animal behavior to avoid
stress and injury when loading animals.

Loading ramps: use gentle slopes to allow for a smooth, easy to walk up loading process Proper space: Avoid overcrowding by ensuring that there is enough space for each animal to stand comfortably and avoid being trampled upon.

Vehicle design: Ensure that the appropriate vehicle and means are used for transportation of animals. Ensure that vehicles have non slip floors and good ventilation to prevent overheating.
Avoid loading animals in a way that can cause suffocation.

Driving: Drive smoothly, avoiding abrupt stops and starts that can cause injury or panic to animals Where animals are transported by rail or road for a period exceeding 12 hours, the person in
charge must stop movement for at least 1 hour after the first 12 hours in order to feed, water and rest such animals and this should be repeated every 12 hours till the end of the journey.

AFTER THE JOURNEY:

Rest: Provide adequate resting space, food and water at the destination Care for sick or injured: Have a plan to isolate and treat sick or injured animals in separate pens
without causing further distress.

Humanely slaughter: If necessary, sick or injured animals should be humanely slaughtered close to the point of arrival.
