Security forces in Zamfara have confirmed the killing of a notorious bandit leader, Isuhu Buzu, during a joint operation in Kaya, Maradun Local Government Area.

The operation was carried out by the Joint Task Force (JTF) comprising soldiers and civilian volunteers. Officials said the raid followed intelligence reports linking Buzu to a series of violent attacks and extortion demands in the area.

A villager of Kuncin Kalgo, Tsafe LGA, told BBC that bandits had recently imposed a levy of N20 million and demanded three motorcycles from the community.

The demand came after security forces launched an offensive in the area, seizing motorcycles from the criminals. In retaliation, the bandits attacked the community, killing two people and firing indiscriminately, forcing residents to flee.

He pleaded anonymity for security reasons, describing the situation as dire.

“The bandits told us to raise N20m and buy them three motorcycles. They said if we failed, they would return and unleash violence. They live among us with weapons, taking food and even women as they please. This is not peace; it is fear.”

He appealed to government authorities to station security personnel permanently in the community, warning that sporadic raids only provoke reprisals.

Confirming the development, Mustafa Jafaru Kaura, media adviser to the Zamfara State governor, said the government was aware of the security challenges in Kuncin Kalgo and surrounding areas. He noted that the killing of Isuhu Buzu was a major breakthrough.

“Based on credible intelligence, security forces laid an ambush and eliminated Isuhu Buzu, who had long terrorised Maradun communities. His body was brought into town for residents to confirm his death, and there was widespread jubilation,” Kaura said.

He added that the state government would not relent until all criminal gangs threatening the lives of citizens are completely dismantled.
