NovaChill, the new joint-venture cold-storage company formed by Mystrose Agro Commodities Limited and the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), has unveiled an ambitious plan to tackle Nigeria’s persistent food security challenges.

The company said its nationwide rollout of modern cold-chain warehouses is designed to drastically cut post-harvest losses that have long plagued the country’s agriculture sector.

Nigeria loses a significant percentage of its fresh produce every year due to inadequate storage, particularly onions, potatoes and other perishable crops. These losses reduce farmers’ earnings, push up food prices and limit availability, leaving millions of Nigerians vulnerable.

NovaChill said its intervention will create a more reliable preservation system to support farmers and stabilise the market.

The company’s programme will formally kick off in the first week of December 2025 with the groundbreaking and launch of what it describes as Nigeria’s most advanced onion-storage hub in Sokoto. The facility is expected to serve as a major preservation centre for onion-producing communities across the region.

This would be followed by another cold storage warehouse in the South South region, in the first quarter of 2026. NovaChill said this next installation will expand its footprint into another critical agricultural zone.

The company emphasised that the impact of these facilities will be immediate and far-reaching.

By providing dependable storage, NovaChill expects to significantly reduce post-harvest losses, stabilise supply throughout the year and contribute to lowering prices for consumers.
