The Provost of College of Education, Ikere Ekiti, Professor Francisca Aladejana, has warned against appointing a novice as minister of education.
She advised President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint an educationist who is familiar with the problems confronting educational development of the country.
Addressing a press conference as part of activities for the 22nd convocation of the college, Aladejana said appointing an experienced person as minister would help address the problems facing the sector.
She said a total of 2,438 students, among them 70 with distinction, would be graduating from the 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 academic sessions. “Every aspect of stakeholders in education has problem; students, parents, teachers, curriculum and government. The president should appoint somebody that knows the terrain in the education sector,” she said.
The provost said in her quest to ensure that lecturers acquired higher degrees to engender academic excellence, she banned the use of religious and traditional titles in the institution.
“Some of them were using the names as cover up. They didn’t want to go for higher degrees. But when I came on board, I stopped all academic and non-academic staff from bearing chiefs, pastors, alhajis or whatever. This is an academic environment, it is either you are mister or doctor,” the provost said.
