Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has dissolved the board of Bayelsa United Football Club and sacked the technical crew following the team’s relegation from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) to the Nigerian National League (NNL).

The Press Secretary to Governor, Mr Daniel Alabrah, in a statement on Wednesday, quoted the governor as directing that all affected board members, coaches and officials hand over the club’s property in their possession to the Commissioner for Sports Development without delay.

He said an interim management would be constituted to oversee the team’s reorganisation and facilitate its immediate return to the top flight of Nigerian football.

It will be recalled that Bayelsa United finished the 2026 Nigeria Premier Football League season second from bottom with a paltry 43 points from 38 matches.

The club managed to win 11, draw 10 while losing 17 matches.

Although they whitewashed Kwara United 4-0 in their final match of the season, it was not enough to save them from relegation.

Bayelsa United have experienced three relegations from the Nigerian topflight and two promotions back to it since its founding in 2008.
