The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has suspended Plateau United goalkeeper, Adewale Adeyinka, over allegations of involvement in betting activities. The suspension, effective immediately, will stand pending a thorough investigation.

NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, confirmed the move in a letter to Adeyinka and Plateau United dated August 5, 2025, stating that the goalkeeper’s registration is “provisionally suspended until the outcome of the investigation.”

He stressed that the league “treats such issues with utmost seriousness,” warning that betting by players “diminishes the integrity of the league and brings the game into disrepute, according to the letter sighted by our correspondent.

Under Article 15.5, Section B of the NPFL Framework and Rules, players are strictly prohibited from betting on football matches, with violations attracting stiff sanctions under Section C.

The suspension was reportedly prompted by a complaint from Plateau United, who alleged that Adeyinka refused to join another club after learning about a contractual clause allowing for immediate termination if found guilty of betting offences. The clause’s discovery, the club claims, led to them alerting league authorities.

A key figure in Plateau United’s plans, Adeyinka has previously played for Kwara United and represented Nigeria at both youth and senior levels. His suspension could have far-reaching consequences, not just for his club but also in the transfer market. Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), who were close to signing him, may now shift focus to Super Eagles shot-stopper Ojo Olorunleke.

The NPFL assured that Adeyinka will have the opportunity to defend himself during the process, with his legal representation duly considered. However, league officials maintain that protecting the integrity of Nigerian football remains their top priority.
