The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has intensified its public awareness campaign on safety at railway level crossings, urging road users to exercise caution and strictly adhere to safety guidelines when approaching rail tracks.

The Corporation emphasized that level crossings—points where railway lines intersect with roads—remain critical zones that require heightened vigilance from motorists, tricycle operators, motorcyclists, pedestrians, and other road users.

In a statement issued by the Corporation, the NRC warned against the dangerous practice of attempting to beat approaching trains at crossings, noting that trains have the right of way and cannot stop abruptly due to their speed and weight.

The management stressed the importance of observing the “stop, look, and listen” rule before crossing railway tracks, as well as obeying all warning signs, signals, and crossing gates installed at designated points.

It also cautioned against distractions such as the use of mobile phones, earphones, and reckless driving while approaching level crossings, describing such behaviour as a major contributor to avoidable accidents.

The Corporation further called on parents and guardians to educate their children on the dangers of playing or loitering around railway tracks and level crossings.

According to the NRC, safety in and around railway infrastructure is a shared responsibility, and public cooperation is essential in preventing accidents and safeguarding lives.

The Corporation reiterated its commitment to ensuring safe and efficient rail operations across the country and urged all Nigerians to remain alert, patient, and responsible when approaching railway crossings.

NRC added that rail tracks are designated strictly for train operations and should never be used as shortcuts by pedestrians or motorists.
