The National Sports Commission (NSC)  has disclosed its target to contribute three percent to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

The Commission’s chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, stated this yesterday during the maiden edition of the Big Sport Dialogue held in Lagos.

Dikko underscored the potential of sports to unlock economic potential, saying the commission is poised to modernize governance, expand and integrate facilities.

He added that the commission has designed clear development pathways in a sustainable business sector.

“We are shifting from consumption to production, from funding to financing, and from agri-administration to a modern global standard sports economy.

“Our ambition is clear. We want sports to contribute at least 3% to Nigeria’s GDP in the coming years, with a population of over 200 million people, full of passion, talent, creativity, and energy,” he said.

He noted that investment in infrastructure and athletes will aid in unlocking the economic drive from the sports ecosystem.

The Commission’s Director-General, Bukola Olapade said the NSC has raked in over N20 billion, emphasising the role of the private sector in sports development.

The Chairman, Organising Committee, Osaze Ebueku said the event was designed to create a platform to chart a way for sports in the country.

“Nigerian sport is standing at a crossroads. But the purpose of this dialogue is not to lament. It is to rebuild,” he said.
