The National Sports Commission (NSC) says there is the need to invest more in grassroot sports to develop the sports economy and help youth in the country.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the steering committee of the 2026 Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI Week), the Chairman of NSC, Shehu Dikko, said organisations should encourage members to support grassroot sports by building small sport facilities in communities basketball court, football pitch or a tennis court.

“If anyone is able to do that, at the end of the day, you are not just creating new future stars, you are also enhancing security, because the young guys around the area will divert their energy into the positive sports they can develop interest in.”

He went on to state that the NESI Week, a week dedicated to different types of sports for those in the electricity sector, aligned with the sports economy.

“If we talk about harnessing the potential of the sports economy, such as the elite sports system, this event has the potential to stimulate activities all across the facets of the economy. This is because you will spend money, people around you will spend money on the pitches, the stadiums and it will affect the people that will sell the kits and everything, So, you are expanding the market which is to our benefit, and that’s the huge economy we will see.”

On his part, the Chairman Steering committee NESI week, Dr. Obiora Anthony, said the event will be the first and this event is to give opportunity for workforce wellness, give opportunity for leadership development, give opportunity for national sport development.”
