The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Abia yesterday said 57 suspected pipeline vandals and oil bunkerers were facing prosecution at the Federal High Court in Umuahia. 

The NSCDC boss, Dr Benito Eze disclosed this in a stakeholders meeting held in Aba, between traditional rulers in the South East Zone who handles pipelines security, UTM offshore, (the company in-charge of pipelines security maintenance of right of way) and the officers and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps within the South East Zone. 

The Commander further said that the Command secured 34 convictions from January to date and the convicts were presently serving various jail terms between one to seven years in different prisons in the state.

Eze said that the command was enjoying robust collaboration with the judiciary and hoped that the pending cases would soon be cleared.

He added that: “We do not have any challenge with prosecution because the judiciary is collaborating with us to ensure that our cases do not suffer undue delay.”

He restated the commitment of the command towards reducing the rate of pipeline vandalism and oil bunkering in Abia and warned those who engage in the crime to stop it.

The NSCDC boss revealed that the stakeholders came out with workable strategies at the end of the meeting that will ensure the safety and security of pipelines while assuring Nigerians that before the end of this month, product pumping to Enugu will be achieved.
