Tragedy struck in Abuja at the weekend after a yet-to-be-identified officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) allegedly shot dead a staff of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Oladipo Akinola, during a routine enforcement operation.

The Director of Operations at AMAC, Shehu Shugaba, who confirmed the incident, said it occurred on Friday at NITEL Junction in Wuse II.

According to him, the deceased, a member of the council’s Mobile Advert Permit unit, was part of a team conducting checks on vehicles to ensure compliance with the 2026 operational permit requirements.

He explained that the team had stopped a Hilux vehicle to determine whether it was being used for commercial purposes or as a private vehicle.

“In the course of the inspection, they discovered the vehicle belonged to a Chinese company and requested its 2026 operational permit. However, the occupants presented a 2025 permit, which had already expired,” he said.

Shugaba said the enforcement team subsequently impounded the vehicle, prompting one of the occupants to make a phone call.

He said shortly after, two men in NSCDC uniforms reportedly arrived at the scene.

He alleged that an altercation ensued between the civil defence personnel, the vehicle occupants, and the AMAC officials, during which one of the NSCDC officers opened fire.

“The officer shot Akinola in the chest. He fell to the ground and died instantly,” Shugaba said, adding that the suspects fled the scene in the vehicle immediately after the incident.

He said the victim was rushed to Garki Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
Shugaba stressed that AMAC revenue officials are duly employed staff carrying out legitimate government duties, not touts, and called for justice.

He urged the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, to ensure a thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible.

Reacting, the FCT Police Command confirmed the incident and said a full investigation had been ordered.

In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the Commissioner of Police said efforts were underway to identify the NSCDC officer involved, as well as trace the company linked to the vehicle and other persons connected to the case.

The command appealed to members of the public with useful information to assist the investigation by contacting the police through its official channels.
