The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Abeokuta Branch, has called on the Ogun State Government to provide clear timelines for the operationalization of the state’s electricity market, as part of efforts to fully implement ongoing power sector reforms.

The professional body made the call while commending Governor Dapo Abiodun for inaugurating a 15-man administrative team for the Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission (OGERC). 

It described the move as a major step toward implementing the Ogun State Electricity Law (Bill No. 017/OG/2024).

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Olumayowa Ayodeji Idowu, the branch noted that the inauguration aligned with its earlier recommendation to fast-track the operationalization of the state’s electricity framework following the signing of the law.

The NSE said the reform process is time-bound, citing a directive by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), which mandates the transfer of regulatory oversight to state authorities, with a full transition deadline of June 23, 2025. 

 

 

 

It warned that delays could create regulatory gaps affecting consumer protection, licensing, tariff setting, and dispute resolution.

 

 

 

While acknowledging progress made so far, the engineers urged the state government to expedite the establishment and full functionality of all institutions under the law.

 

 

 

The body also stressed the need for inclusive stakeholder engagement throughout the implementation process.

 

 

 

The branch further emphasized the importance of appointing qualified and registered professional engineers to oversee both leadership and technical operations within the new regulatory framework, noting that this would ensure efficiency, technical integrity, and sustainable growth in the sector.

 

 

 

According to the NSE, timely completion of the reform agenda would help unlock economic and industrial benefits, including improved power supply, increased investor confidence, and better service delivery to residents and businesses across Ogun State.

 

 

 

The association reaffirmed its readiness to support the state government with technical expertise to ensure the successful implementation of the electricity reform programme.

 

 

 

 

 

“While commending the progress made, the Branch urged the Ogun State Government to expedite action on the remaining key components of its earlier submission, particularly:

 

 

 

“The full establishment and functionalization of all institutions provided for under the law;

 

Clear timelines for the operationalization of the electricity market; Inclusive stakeholder engagement during implementation,” the body said.
