Ahead of the upcoming National Sports Festival billed to hold in Edo State early next year, the Vice Chairman of Cross River Table Tennis Association, Mr Usen Umoh said they are intensifying preparation in order to remain unbeatable.
Umoh said that in the last 15 years, the female team of the state has dominated in the National Sports Festivals because of the efforts they put in to see the game grow.
According to him, the state has produced national, international as well as Olympic Table Tennis champions.
“Our Table Tennis champions, as well as the many young stars we have discovered yet, are daily practising at the refurbished Table Tennis court inside the UJ Esuene Stadium Calabar. We want to consolidate on our prowess especially as we approach the National Sports Festival. All our international stars are preparing. But our major challenge is sponsorship…”
Umoh maintained that most of the youngsters playing in the state were discovered few years ago in a Primary School Table Tennis Competition sponsored by the Royal International Farms Ltd.
“We have so many children enthusiastic about playing but there is the challenge of facilities; a pair of rackets used by players is about N50 thousand that is why we call on sports-loving individuals and corporate organisations to sponsor the game,” Umoh said.
He commended His Holiness Olumba Olumba Obu who has always given support to them as well as Ntufam Edim Inok who recently sponsored the maiden Calabar annual Table Tennis championship concluded yesterday.
