The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced an investigation into what it described as a “serious operational occurrence” involving the Abuja–Kaduna Train Service.
The incident occurred on March 16, 2026, at about 9:16 a.m. along the Jere–Asham section near Asham Station in Kaduna State.
According to preliminary information released by the Safety Investigation Bureau, the KA2 service comprising two locomotives (front and rear), a power car, two business class coaches and six standard passenger coaches experienced a mechanical fault during its run.
The NSIB said a rear locomotive detached from the moving train and rolled forward on a downward gradient, making contact with the rear section of the train.
A total of 429 passengers, 46 crew members, and 24 security personnel were onboard at the time of the incident. While no fatalities were recorded, several passengers sustained injuries and were administered first aid by onboard medical and security personnel.
Despite the impact, the train remained on track and was able to continue its journey to the Idu Railway Station, arriving at about 10:39 a.m., where further assistance was provided to passengers.
The Director-General of the bureau, Alex Badeh Jr., said the investigation would focus on multiple factors to determine the root cause of the occurrence.
According to him, the probe will examine the integrity of the locomotive attachment systems, with particular attention to a possible coupling failure that may have led to the detachment.
He added that investigators would also review operational procedures, including train configuration and data recorded during the descent toward Asham.
The condition of the track and other relevant infrastructure within the affected corridor will also form part of the investigation.
The NSIB said findings from the probe would guide safety recommendations aimed at preventing a recurrence and strengthening operational standards across the rail sector.
