Abubakar, who spoke while receiving an award on behalf of the fund in Abuja from a coalition of 40 Non-Governmental Organizations, said promotion has never been lopsided as it is done in strict compliance with federal character principles.
“Our promotion is executed based on government policy, which means we are guided by federal character; if we don’t, we would answer to the National Assembly. It is possible some people have some grudges, but in everything we do, we ensure equity, we must ensure balance,” he said.
He also debunked insinuations of usurpation of management powers by the board of the fund, saying the law setting up NSITF clearly spells out the functions of its organs.
He said “the Act establishing us names us as management-board. Whatever I do as MD or someone does as an executive director; we have the mandate of the board. We are a management board, not like other organizations. The board members are part-time, so they cannot always be here, we act on their behalf.”
According to him, “in an establishment where there are old and new staff due to additional responsibilities, there are bound to be complaints of side tracking especially by the older staff who may feel they have not been given what they deserve.
“The thinking is that they remained with the organization when it was struggling for the implementation of the Employees Compensation Scheme. What we can do is try to be fair to all sides. We will continue to ensure fairness to all. There was a committee set up to look at the complaints. That is part of the steps to right any perceived wrongdoing.”
