NSPP announces 2018 shortlist

Nigerian Students Poetry Prize (NSPP) has announced the shortlist for the 2018 edition of the NSPP. 

Ten students made the list. These include: Oyekunle Ifeoluwa Peter (Federal University of Technology, Akure) for his poem, ‘Words My Mother Told Me’. Deborah Oluwakemi Selemon (University of Ibadan, Ibadan) for ‘Red’. Hauwa Saleh Abubakar (Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria) for ‘Colours’. Iberiyenari Godstime Tamunofiri (Niger Delta University Wilberforce Island, Yenagoa) fór ‘Deep Dreams’. Kester Kanayo Onyemaechi (University of Benin, Ugbowo) for ‘Here, Nowhere’. 

Others are Idowu Ebenezer Odeyemi (Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti) for his piece, ‘This Agony Mother Feels’. Ubi Ubi Ofem (Cross River University of Technology, Calabar) or ‘Thunder’. Amagwula Nnenna Comfort (University of Lagos, Lagos) for ‘Yet Another Head’. Okoye Micah Oguguo (Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Enugu) for ‘Mother Dearest’. Ikeobi Samuel Chukwubuokem (University of Agriculture, Abeokuta) for ‘Two Sides of Hakeem’.

According to Ismail Bala, chair of the judging panel, including Hulya Yilmaz, Soji Cole, Kukogoho Iruesiri Samson and Saka Aliyu this year’s entries are “diverse in style.”

NSPP was instituted in 2016 to stimulate creativity and promote literary excellence amongst Nigerian undergraduates. The Prize has had two grand prize winners. Noah Oladele, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (2016) and Bakre Fadil Adedamola, University of Ibadan (2017). 

The prize winners of this current edition will be announced at the NSPP Awards slated for May 24, 2018 at Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu.
